ESL One Katowice 2018: OG’s run denied by Liquid, UNiVeRsE steals the show

The last day for the group stage is currently underway, and many of the top-notch teams are already out from ESL One Katowice 2018.

The playoffs for the event will start off with six teams out of which two teams namely Fnatic and Vici Gaming have qualified for the semifinals. Team Secret, Team Liquid, Virtus.pro and the winner between EG and Newbee will face off against each other in the quarterfinals.

Group A Overview

In Group A, Effect and Complexity got an early exit after dropping to the lower bracket and losing to their counterparts. Next teams to follow were Optic Gaming and Mineski who despite a strong showing, couldn’t match up to the aggression of their opponents.

The biggest surprise in the group was probably OG’s ouster. The team had a solid run coming into the event. With a 37-2 win record in the past month, OG looked like a strong contender to make it to the final of the event. However, OG crumbled in the first match and dropped to the lower bracket, losing to Vici Gaming.

But this seemed like a wakeup call for the team who went on to win two matches in the lower bracket, defeating Effect and Mineski in the process. Their fate brought them to a match against Team Liquid who ended their run and their hopes of progressing further at ESL One Katowice 2018.

Group B Overview

In Group B, the revamped roster of Na`Vi and Infamous were the first ones to get eliminated from the event. The toughest match of the lower bracket, however, was between LGD and Newbee in which, the Chinese team edged past their opponents with a 2-1 scoreline.

Evil Geniuses were also demoted to the lower bracket after losing their first game against LGD. The team came back strongly and had scored good wins against Infamous and Kinguin with ease.

The NA team’s biggest test will be their match against Newbee. The winner of that match will make it to the playoffs while the loser will take a flight home.

The talk of the town, however, were teams like Fnatic and Team Secret who edged past their opponents in the upper bracket, to vie for a chance to get a Semifinal spot. Team Secret being favorite, were touted to win the match. But the lady luck had other thoughts.

After losing Game 1 to Fnatic, Team Secret came back and won Game 2 in a convincing fashion. In Game 3, they took control and outperformed the cores of Fnatic. This is where Fnatic’s ‘UNiVeRsE’ did something completely out of the blue and managed to win them the game.

It was just unbelievable for the fans. The casters were spell-bounded to see the miracle of UNiVeRsE. Even the opponents, Team Secret, were full of praise for the player. With the win, Fnatic moved to the semifinals. Now, Team Secret will face Team Liquid in the all-important battle for a Semi-Final spot.
